Ottawa Summer Activities

With the warm weather finally upon us, it’s time to think about taking in some of the outdoor activities that are in and around Ottawa at this time of year. We’ve put together an overview of some of the events coming up for your consideration.

Gatineau Beer Fest – May 30 to June 1 (Jacques Cartier Park)

In its third year this festival showcases local breweries and craft beer in an outdoor country atmosphere and also features workshops and cooking demonstrations. Sit back and relax while enjoying street art, troubadours and other live performances in the park.

Westfest – June 13 to 15 (Westboro Village)

This free festival of music, art and life features live performances by Ashley MacIsaac, Good2Go and many others. This is one of the biggest free street parties in Canada.

Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival – June 18 to 20

This annual festival is the largest dragon boat event in North America with more than 200 teams competing in celebration of the historic Chinese tradition. The event takes place at Mooney’s Bay and along with the colourful boat races, visitors can enjoy great musical entertainment, extreme sports demonstrations, exhibitors and artisans, a beachside bar and a children’s play area. This is a fun and exciting event for all ages, and admission is free.

Living In Space – Canadian Aviation and Space Museum

This exhibit was created by the Canadian Space Agency and features hands-on activities for children including a computerized game that lets you assemble a space meal, and learn what it would be like to maneuver around in a weightless environment. Educational and fun for kids of all ages.

Creatures Of Light – Bioluminescence (The Canadian Museum of Nature)

Truly a unique exhibit that explores extraordinary creatures that produce light, from fireflies to strange deep-sea fishes. Visitors will wander through a series of immersive environments to explore the diversity of organisms that glow and find out how they do it.

Ottawa Rib Fest – June 18 to 22 (Sparks Street Mall)

If you are a rib lover you will want to mark this on your calendar. Some of the best “ribbers” from across North America descend on the Mall to compete for the title of Best Barbeque Chicken and Ribs.

Ottawa Fringe Festival – June 19 to 29 (Various venues)

This is Ottawa’s largest art and theatre festival and is a unique opportunity to see a variety of art pieces from local, national and international artists at venues throughout the downtown area and the University of Ottawa.

Ottawa Jazz Festival – June 20 to July 1

This event is a combination of large outdoor concerts at Confederation Park and smaller intimate shows at indoor spaces like the NAC. Approximately 300 Canadian performers will be featured in the 2014 edition that is expected to attract as many as 180,000 fans.
